KPMG announced as new sponsor for Guernsey Touch
GUERNSEY Touch has agreed a three year sponsorship deal with KPMG Channel Islands.
The agreement sees KPMG become the sole sponsor of the sport, which was launched in Guernsey 10 years ago.
‘The sport is one of the fastest growing in the island and started in 2004 when around a dozen players started playing. The first summer league took place in 2005 with just 12 teams and we now have a super league, summer league and autumn league, more than 350 players, tournaments and a successful record of representing the island at international tournaments,’ said chair Katrina Bray.
‘Securing a three year sponsorship deal with KPMG will allow us to continue building on that success. Their support will be absolutely invaluable and it’s an exciting time for them to be involved as we will also be moving to a new venue which we hope will be a permanent home for the sport.’
KPMG executive director Tony Mancini said the company was delighted to add touch to the sports it already supports in Guernsey.
‘KPMG is an active and enthusiastic supporter of the sport. We have some great sporting talent amongst our people, including one of the island touch players so we are delighted to add touch to the blend,’ said Mr Mancini.
‘We have a long association with the GIAAC’s KPMG Easter Running Festival, Rugby Academy, Mini Soccer Festival and the Jersey Amateur Swimming Association. We have been impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication shown by the Guernsey Touch committee in continuing the phenomenal growth that the sport has seen over the last 10 years.’
Touch originates in the Antipodes and was originally designed as a warm up game for rugby league but quickly became established as a separate sport.
‘Touch is very different to rugby league or union, it’s a much faster but less physical game which is why it appeals to both men and women. It’s one of the few team sports which men and women can play on the same team. We have players in their teens up to their 50s and there is a real mix of colleagues, friends, siblings, couples, parents and their children. That very inclusive nature of touch is what makes it such a success.’
